Posted

Along with getting the right moving quotes and proper packing, here are 5 things you need to do to prepare for an international move

Moving to a new country can be at once both exciting and terrifying. If you have never done an international move, you may be at a loss of where to start. From finding suitable moving quotes., hiring and international moving crew, getting and the requisite legal documents, and learning about the culture, there is a lot to do.  That’s why we here at NCMSS put together this list of 5 important things to do before an international move.

1. Apply for or Renew Your Passport/Visa

Without a passport, you won’t be able to leave and enter another country, which will obviously cut your moving plans short. It takes about 3-6 months to apply for a passport, so make sure you do this well beforehand. You also need to make sure you have a Visa if you plan to work in another country.

2. Health Care

You will inevitably have to see a doctor while living abroad. Make sure you contact your health insurance company to see if they will cover you while abroad. You may also be required to fill out certain immunization forms and present certain medical records, depending on the country.

3. Bank & Phone

It is recommended that you keep your current bank account to maintain your credit score and for paying off outstanding loans. Make sure your credit cards are authorized for international use and consider researching local banks to set up a new checking and savings account. Similarly, you can get an international phone plan or buy an unlocked phone and use SIM cards from local carriers.

4. Copy Important Documents

Make sure you make physical copies of important documents such as your passport, driver’s license, and medical records. You may not need these but you will certainly want them if you run into an emergency.

5. Throw a party

Lastly, you should plan one last hurray with your friends and family before you make the jump across the pond. International moving is fun and an unforgettable experience. Once you get your moving quotes, documentations, bank records, and the like, take some time to relax.
