Posted

While moving to a campus apartment or dorm room may mean you’re seriously downsizing, it’s still entirely possible to spruce it up and make it feel like home. Essentials like your favorite tech gear, cozy bedding, and practical bathroom must-haves can provide a more enjoyable and comfortable grad school experience. Whether it’s your first or final term, our California movers have the following suggestions to simplify your transition.

Clothing

For the most part, you’ll want to keep your wardrobe simple and comfortable. Nonetheless, bring along a few dressier pieces for special occasions and presentations. Consider the seasons and bring appropriate clothes for working out, visiting friends, and of course, studying. Trekking and rain gear are important too, as you never know what the seasons will bring. There’s no need to bring all of your clothes at once, however. Just switch things up later during visits home.

Bedding

Call ahead to find out if you’ll need to supply your own mattress. In either case, you’ll need sheets, a blanket, pillows, a mattress pads, and a duvet or comforter. In case it gets chilly where you are, bring an extra throw or blanket as back-up.

Electronics

Whatever you do, do not forget your cell phone, laptop, tablet, and chargers! Headsets are also a great addition for late-night studying. Batteries and a portable charger can also save you when you’re in a pinch. Plus, keep all your gadgets charged and protected with a surge protector.

Mealtime supplies

When planning California moves, consider your mealtime situation. Will you have access to a kitchen, or will you be using the dining hall? Even if you stick to the dining hall, keep a few must-haves on hand, like plastic cutlery, plates, cups, and napkins for snacks and the occasional meal in your room. Microwave safe containers are also very helpful to keep and reheat meals.

Toiletries

If the dorm room is communal, then get yourself a shower caddy for easy transport of hygiene items and toiletries. Protect your feet with shower shoes or flip-flops, and of course, make sure to have a few sets of face clothes and towels.

Laundry

No matter where you go, there will always be laundry to attend to! Keep supplies like dryer sheets and detergent in a laundry basket, along with a stash of coins for the machines. Whether you’re at a local laundromat or on-campus facility, these things are absolutely essential.
